Self sustaining pocket forest
Planted in 2023, this forest was imagined as a green oasis amid the city of Aurangabad in the arid Marathwada region. Today, this site is teeming with native biodiversity. Native tree species like neem (Azadiracha indica) and bhokar (Cordia dichotoma) offer shade, while the sparse canopied species like babool (Vachellia nilotica) offer sustenance to birds. We spotted several butterflies like jezebels and pansies.
The forest has faced challenges in recent years due to civil works on the adjacent road, but the plants have survived despite the harsh weather and pruning due to civil work. There is an urgent need to provide safeguards to the site to ensure longevity of the forest.

After approximately three years our SUGi Pocket Forests become self-sustaining. They no longer require human maintenance or watering, and can be handed over to Nature for biodiversity and complexity to naturally develop.

This is an exceptional forest that has been irrigated with natural water sources. The growth of the forest has been on the slower side - but that is not unexpected, given the natural irrigation and that the forest is growing in the midst of an older, natural pine forest.
The veteran pines have been providing fantastic cover to the young forest. Lots of pine cones and pine needles line the floor of the forest, providing natural mulch to the growing plants.

Eleven individuals, six of whom were women, were hired for the preparation and planting phases of this project. Biodiversity is now thriving, and we hope to see it continue to flourish in years to come.
