Why cities need to be more biodiverse?
London is home to 55 different species of bees that are dependent on the biodiversity around and within London green spaces such as forests, parks, forests and gardens.
From the tree on the street, to the weeds in the pavement cracks, nature is all around you. We’re making space for biodiversity to thrive.
An oak tree alone can support 2,300 species – 326 of which are entirely dependent on it for their survival.
SUGi brings biodiversity back into urban areas by planting dense, life-giving forests packed with a mix of native shrubs and trees.
The more biodiverse an area, the healthier its ecosystem. Having lots of different species reduces the threat of disease, pests and natural disasters.
It’s critical to our lives, too. Species, and then ecosystems they form, make human life possible. We depend on healthy ecosystems for every breath of fresh air and every mouthful of food.
Biodiversity exists where all life thrives.
But in our cities, nature is often paved over and tidied away. What would happen if we let it back in? In every lot in your city, there’s a forest waiting to be released. Forests can grow almost anywhere.
By building soil fertility and planting a new habitat, we create the perfect environment for all organisms, from mammals to pollinators and fungi, to live symbiotically. We can kickstart the chain of biodiversity even in an urban area.
